Master Coach Bob Koch has developed a successful summer academy program designed especially for the female point-guard. With over 44 years of experience at high schools and many years experience as Academy Director, Master Coach Bob Koch has developed a valuable summer program that provides expert training in the point guard and shooting guard position. Learn all the facets of these guard positions through Classroom instruction, Shooting, Drills, Situation Analysis, Leadership and motivation analysis and contests.

Zone offense Principles - 13 Commandments.
Types of Dribbling.
Use of shot, Pass Fakes.
Fast break guidelines - 1 on 1, 2 on 1, 3 on 1, 3 on 2, 4 on 3.
Man offensive Principles.
Press guidelines - Key - Recognition of outlets, pass vs. dribble, spacing.
Shooting - Instruction, Techniques and practice drills.
Passing Drills - Type and location.
Dribbling Drills - 1-2-3-4 balls, hard to guard series and more.
Evaluative criteria - assist to turnover ratio, tips and 150 club.
Recognition of tempo - fast, slow, stall.
Use of the clock - time outs, dead ball situations.
Defense - containment, steals, tips and traps.
Vision enhancement techniques - drills and instruction.
Leadership/Motivation - instructions and handouts, quotes.
Vertical enhancement - drills and instruction.
Rebounding and Blocking out - Man/Zone.
Posture/Technique of guard play - create new angles, hip height dribble.
An NBA or college official will explain the rules related to guard play on both sides of the ball.
The utilization of college post players to illustrate the proper technique of high/low post feeds.
Repetitive instruction on the use of cuts and screens.
Utilization of the patented Koch pass catcher - A device used for passing skill enhancement.
Classroom instruction, drills, situation analysis, leadership and motivation analysis, and contests.

Classroom  Instruction - Daily classroom instruction will precede on the court activity.  Through the use of videos, handouts, overheads and daily quizzes, each player will learn the mental and physical aspects of the point guard position.

Shooting and Corrective Shooting - Several hours of the Academy will be devoted to the proper mechanics of shooting drills and the essentials of corrective shooting. Numerous shooting drills will be presented to enhance each players performance in preparation of her next season.

Drills -  Desales University offers two full size gyms with six courts to teach and practice a variety of drills in the half court and full court setting.  Daily activity will include numerous passing and transition drills to enhance player action and reaction to particular situations.

Baden Big Ball - The Baden Big Ball will be utilized to improve ball handling, passing and shooting skills.  The Accu Shot Shooting Aid will be utilized on all the baskets.  New: The  Baden Heavy Trainer Monogram Basketball will be sold at the academy for a special price of $45.

Situation Analysis - Players will be taught the essentials for attacking a variety of defenses, full and half court, late game strategies, the keys of fastbreak offense, the transition game and much more.

Leadership and Motivation Analysis - Classroom and homework assignments will include handouts, discussions and presentations on the strategies of motivation and qualities of leadership.

An Active and Experienced Staff - All of the staff members are currently coaching and instructing/directing at academys and/or playing the game.  The Academy director has worked with George Lehman, Buzz Braman, Herb Magee, and Ace Hoffstein on the art of shooting.

Five Contests - One on One, Free Throw, Speed Dribble, and all-around challenge.

Use of the recently patented Koch Katcher for passing drills.

Master Coach Bob Koch has coached for over 44 years at five different high schools.  Perhaps the only coach in Pennsylvania history to have coached at least one league champion at each of those schools.  During that tenure (333 wins), his teams have been represented by a first team all league point guard for 22 consecutive seasons.  Each of those point guards has been awarded a full basketball scholarship at the Division I or Division II levels.

His personal accolades include 9 coach of the year honors, 2 undefeated seasons, 9 league championships, 60 all league players and 22 scholarship recipients.  In 1995, he was runner up Converse National High School Coach of the year and a coach in the 1995 Nike All-American game aired on ESPN2.

During his coaching tenure, he was the camp director for Blue Star (10 years), and apprenticed under the tutelage of Kathy Rush, Dean Smith, John Calipari, Bobby Knight, Rollie Massimino, Theresa Grentz, and Jim Boeheim.  He is the former director of USA junior elite camps and has a private basketball tutoring business of 60 players.

He was selected twice to be judge for the  Big East All Tournament Team.

In 1997 and 2000  Coach Koch presented a clinic on point guard play at the Women's Final Four. Finally, Coach Koch published his first article on point guard skills in Winning Hoops Magazine, in July, 2011.

Bill Michaels will be entering his tenth year on staff at the point guard academy and will be serving again as one of the on court directors. Michaels has over ten years of coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels.  Currently Coach Michaels is the Head Coach at Williamson Trade School where he has led his teams to the USCAA National Final Four in the last six years.  He has earned coach of the year honors twice in his coaching career.  While at Farrell High School Michaels was named the WPIAL Coach of the Year and the Pittsburgh Post Graduate Coach of the Year in 1998 and led his team to a District Championship. 

Kate Corcoran has been with the academy for the past 11 years and will be serving as an on court director. Corcoran has served as an assistant coach at the collegiate level with Ursinus College, Cabrini College and most recently at Penn State Berks. Her playing career was spent at DeSales University where she helped to lead the Bulldogs to three conference championships, three NCAA D-III tournament appearances and an ECAC championship. At DeSales Corcoran earned MAC First Team Honors in 1999 and 2000, was named the Lehigh Valley Small Colleges Player of the Year in 2000 and was named Kodak Honorable Mention All-American in 2000.

Billera Hall - is a state-of-the-art recreational facility which boasts a total of 82,500 sq. ft.  Billera Hall comes complete with a fitness center with weights and aerobic areas, a gym with three full basketball courts, a running track and roll down curtains that can separate the large space into three smaller stations as needed for basketball, volleyball or tennis. As one large space, the courts can be used for lacrosse, baseball or track practice. A balcony overlooks the action providing spectators with clear views of all sporting events.

University Center - This 26,000 square food facility opened in 2003 and provides 185 new parking spaces, a 500-seat dining space with a large two-story glass window that offers a marvelous view of the campus, a large food court, a kitchen, lounge, restrooms, an outdoor patio, and a bridge over the swale and computer stations.


Aviat Hall, the residence hall which opened in the fall of 2001, honors the Blessed Leonine Aviat, the co-founder of the Oblates Sisters. Aviat Hall is a modern residence hall located across from Conmy and Tocik Halls. It features 48 rooms equipped with telephone and internet connections and houses up to 96 students.

IMPORTANT ACADEMY FACTS & ACADEMY FEES & AREA ACCOMMODATIONS
ResidentTuition - $505.00  Includes T-shirt, pre and post tests (written), food, accommodations in dormitory, instruction and gym use.

Commuter Tuition - $295.00 Includes  all of the above except meals and lodging.

Coaches: All levels – Housing, meals, handouts, notes, observations, lectures, guest speakers, and all activities included.  Fee:  $400.00.  Commuter rates available upon request.

Deposit:  A $100 Deposit must accompany your application.  The cashed check will serve as your confirmation acceptance.  All academy attendees must be paid in full prior to arrival. No refunds or credits if you cancel after July 1st.  Any participant who leaves the Academy  due to injury of illness will be issued a transferable, pro-rated credit for future point guard academy sessions.  Balance is due by July 21, 2014.

Returned checks - There will be a $25 charge for any returned check.  No personal checks will be accepted at registration.

Room Key Deposit - College  policy dictates a $75 deposit as collateral for lost keys.  This refundable deposit must be a separate $75 check, which will be returned after check out and key return.

Linens - All academy participants should provide their own linens: sheets, blanket, towels, pillow.  However, the the college staff does provide a linen service for a nominal fee.

A Certified Trainer - will be present to provide immediate evaluation and treatment of sports injuries related to the Point/Shooting Guard Academy.

Doctor's Physical - Must be brought to the Academy.   Academy participants must provide proof of medical and accidental insurance. The physical can not be more than one year old.

Registration - Directions, equipment needs, academy schedule and departure times will be mailed after registration as part of the Information Packet.
